«Der Kollaborativ-Robotik gehört die Zukunft – Neues Kompetenz- und Transferzentrum für kollaborative Roboter mit Förderung des Bundes in Biel eingeweiht»
Biel, 6. Juni 2023. Am Standort des Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne (SIPBB) eröffnet ein neues Kompetenz- und Transferzentrum für kollaborative Roboter seine Türen. Gründungspartner sind der Verein Swiss Smart Factory, die Berner Fachhochschule BFH, die beiden eidgenössischen technischen Hochschulen ETH Zürich und EPFL. Unter dem Namen Swiss Cobotics Competence Center (S3C) wollen die Initianten die Chancen der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Mensch und Roboter aufzeigen. Die Industrie erhält mit dem S3C Zugang zu Know-how und einer Demonstrationsplattform für innovative Cobotic-Lösungen.
Roboter, die hinter einem Schutzzaun schwere Bauteile hieven und verschweissen, gehören in das klassische Bild der industriellen Massenfertigung, wie wir es seit den 70er Jahren kennen.
Roboter, die uns bei unseren täglichen Arbeiten ganz nah und flexibel unterstützen, sind bisher noch nicht in unserem Alltag angekommen. Gerade die Schweizer Fertigungsindustrie könnte durch robotische Helfer einen Wettbewerbsschub erhalten. Doch trotz des technologischen Fortschritts sind kollaborative Roboter noch die Ausnahme in Schweizer Werkshallen.
Das Swiss Cobotics Competence Center (S3C) hat zum Ziel, diese Lücke zwischen neuen, technologischen Fähigkeiten und der industriellen Realität zu schliessen und somit kollaborativen Robotern in die breite industrielle Anwendung zu verhelfen. «Richtig eingesetzt, versprechen kollaborative Roboter eine höhere Produktivität und vermeiden die Produktionsverlagerung von Hochlohnländern wie der Schweiz ins Ausland», so Gabriel Gruener Professor für Robotik an der BFH und Vorstandsmitglied des Vereins S3C.
Am Standort Biel werden die Kompetenzen gebündelt
Dazu werden am Standort des Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne (SIPBB) in Biel entsprechende Kompetenzen im S3C gebündelt und eine Test- und Demonstrationszentrum für Kollaborativ-Robotik aufgebaut. Getragen wird das S3C von der Swiss Smart Factory, BFH, EPFL, ETH Zürich sowie weiteren 14 akademischen Partnern und über 18 Partnern aus der Industrie und aus allen Teilen der Schweiz, die sich zu einem Public-Private-Partnership zusammengeschlossen haben.
Gemeinsam soll mit dem S3C eine zentrale Anlaufstelle für die Schweizer Industrie zum Thema Kollaborativ-Robotik geschaffen werden. Dabei liegt der Fokus zunächst auf den vier Anwendungsbereichen: Präzisions- und Uhrenindustrie, Werkzeug- und Maschinenindustrie, Medizintechnik sowie Laborautomatisierung.
Schweizerisches Netzwerk für Technologietransfer
Das S3C ist eine Forschungseinrichtung von nationaler Bedeutung und wird im Rahmen der Initiative «Advanced Manufacturing Technology Transfer Centers» (AM-TTC) für die Jahre 2022-2024 sowohl mit Mitteln des ETH-Rats als auch durch das Eidgenössische Departement für Wirtschaft, Bildung und Forschung (WBF) gemäss Art. 15 FIFG gefördert. Eine Option auf Anschlussfinanzierung für die Jahre 2025-2028 ist bereits vorgesehen. Neben dem S3C wird in diesem zweiten AM-TTC-Call ein weiteres Zentrum in Bereich Photonics gefördert. Aus dem ersten AM-TTC-Call 2019 sind die beiden Zentren ANAXAM und dem Swiss m4m Center entstanden.

« L’avenir appartient à la robotique collaborative – Un nouveau centre de compétences et de transfert pour les robots collaboratifs avec un financement fédéral inauguré à Bienne »
Bienne, le 6 juin 2023. Un nouveau centre de compétences et de transfert pour les robots collaboratifs ouvre ses portes sur le site du Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne (SIPBB). Les partenaires fondateurs sont l’association Swiss Smart Factory, la Haute école spécialisée bernoise BFH, les deux écoles polytechniques fédérales ETH Zurich et EPFL. Sous le nom de Swiss Cobotics Competence Center (S3C), les initiateurs veulent montrer les opportunités de coopération entre les humains et les robots. Grâce au S3C, l’industrie accède à un savoir-faire et à une plate-forme de démonstration pour des solutions cobotiques innovantes.
Les robots qui soulèvent et soudent des composants lourds derrière une clôture de protection appartiennent à l’image classique de la production industrielle de masse, telle que nous la connaissons depuis les années 1970.
Les robots qui nous soutiennent de manière très étroite et flexible dans notre travail quotidien ne sont pas encore arrivés dans notre vie quotidienne. L’industrie manufacturière suisse en particulier pourrait bénéficier d’un coup de pouce concurrentiel grâce aux aides robotiques, mais malgré les progrès technologiques, les robots collaboratifs restent l’exception dans les bâtiments d’usine suisses.
Le Swiss Cobotics Competence Center (S3C) vise à combler ce fossé entre les nouvelles compétences technologiques et la réalité industrielle et ainsi aider les robots collaboratifs à trouver une large application industrielle. «S’ils sont utilisés correctement, les robots collaboratifs promettent une productivité plus élevée et évitent la délocalisation de la production de pays à salaires élevés comme la Suisse vers d’autres pays», déclare Gabriel Gruener professeur de robotique à la BFH et membre du conseil d’administration de l’association S3C.
Les compétences sont regroupées sur le site de Bienne
À cette fin, sur le site du Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne (SIPBB) à Bienne, les compétences correspondantes sont regroupées dans le S3C et un centre ouvert de test et de démonstration pour la robotique collaborative est mis en place. Le S3C est soutenu par la Swiss Smart Factory, la BFH, l’EPFL, l’ETH Zurich, ainsi ainsi que 14 autres partenaires académiques et plus de 18 partenaires de l’industrie et de toutes les régions de Suisse, qui se sont réunis pour former un partenariat public-privé.
En collaboration avec le S3C, un point de contact central pour l’industrie suisse sur le thème de la robotique collaborative doit être créé. Dans un premier temps, l’accent est mis sur les quatre domaines d’application : industrie de précision et horlogère, industrie des machines-outils, technique médicale et automatisation de laboratoire.
Réseau suisse de transfert de technologie
Le S3C est un institut de recherche d’importance nationale et est financé dans le cadre de l’initiative «Centres de transfert de technologie de fabrication avancée» (AM-TTC) pour les années 2022-2024, tant par des fonds du Conseil des EPF que par le Département fédéral de l’économie, de la formation et de la recherche (DEFR) selon l’article 15 RIPA. Une option de financement de suivi pour les années 2025-2028 est déjà prévu. Outre le S3C, un autre centre dans le domaine de la photonique est financé dans ce deuxième AM-TTC-Call. Le premier AM-TTC-Call 2019 a donné naissance aux deux centres ANAXAM et au Swiss m4m Center.

« The future belongs to collaborative robotics – New competence and transfer center for collaborative robots with federal funding inaugurated in Biel »
Biel, June 6, 2023. A new competence and transfer center for collaborative robotics opens its doors at the location of the Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne (SIPBB). Founding partners are the Swiss Smart Factory association, the Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH, the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology ETH Zurich and EPFL. Under the name Swiss Cobotics Competence Center (S3C) the initiators want to demonstrate the opportunities for collaboration between humans and robots. With the S3C, the industry gains access to know-how and a demonstration platform for innovative cobotic solutions.
Robots that heave and weld heavy components behind a protective fence belong in the classic image of industrial mass production, as we have known it since the 1970s.
Robots that support us very closely and flexibly in our daily work have not yet arrived in our everyday lives. The Swiss manufacturing industry in particular could receive a competitive boost from robotic helpers, but despite technological progress, collaborative robots are still the exception in Swiss factories.
The Swiss Cobotics Competence Center (S3C) aims to close this gap between new technological skills and industrial reality and thus help collaborative robots to find broad industrial application. «If used correctly, collaborative robots promise higher productivity and avoid the relocation of production from high-wage countries such as Switzerland to other countries,» says Prof. Dr. Gabriel Gruener lecturer at the BFH and board member of the S3C association.
Competences are bundled at the Biel site
For this purpose, at the location of the Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne (SIPBB) in Biel, corresponding competencies are bundled in the S3C and an open test and demonstration center for collaborative robotics is set up. The S3C is supported by the Swiss Smart Factory, BFH, EPFL, ETH Zurich, as well as further 14 academic partners and over 18 partners from the industry and from all parts of Switzerland, who have joined together to form a public-private partnership.
With the S3C, a central point of contact for Swiss industry is to be created on the subject of collaborative robotics. The focus is initially set on the four application areas: precision and watchmaking industry, machine tool industry, medical technology and laboratory automation.
Swiss network for technology transfer
The S3C is a research institution of national importance and is being funded as part of the «Advanced Manufacturing Technology Transfer Centers» (AM-TTC) initiative for the years 2022-2024 with funds from the ETH Board as well as from the Federal Department for Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER) according to Art. 15 RIPA. An option for follow-up funding for the years 2025- 2028 is already planned. In addition to the S3C, another centre in the field of photonics is being funded in this second AM-TTC Call. In the first AM-TTC-Call 2019, the two centres ANAXAM and the Swiss m4m Center have emerged.
